Robert M. Johnson

Supervisor

About Me

I grew up in New Jersey and graduated from Bloomsburg University. I started as an accounting major, but got interested in computer programming and switched majors to Information Processing. Upon graduation in 1979, I moved to Lancaster County and worked for Armstrong World Industries until 1997, including a 2-year assignment for Armstrong Furniture in Appomattox, VA. I worked at The Hershey Company from 1997 until 2015 as Sr. Business Process Manager. I then worked 7 years at The High Company. I retired from High in June 2023. I continue to offer Business Process consulting through my company, Arkbob, LLC.

Here are some facts about me:

  • I am married to Carol. Carol is a Hempfield High School graduate.

  • My son Ben graduated from Hempfield High School in 2007 and lives in East Hempfield.

  • I have lived in East Hempfield since 1989.

  • I attend Hempfield Church of the Brethren. I play bass guitar in the praise band.

  • I was involved with Hempfield Youth Association from 1994 – 1999. I was the overall HYA intramural baseball coordinator, obtaining fields, coaches, scheduling, budgeting, equipment ordering and distribution, and head coach for spring and fall baseball during that time. I coordinated the introduction of tee-ball and fall baseball in HYA.

  • I earned a black belt in Taekwando karate in 2000.

  • I feel a special affinity for the fire department. My father was a paid fireman in Madison, NJ. My mother was the fire department secretary. I have fond memories traveling to the schools in my town helping my father test fire extinguishers and helping my mother maintain fireman attendance records and assembling Fire Prevention Week packets for the children in the schools.

  • I was the Minority Inspector of Election poll worker in the East Hempfield Petersburg precinct from 2018 until 2021.

  • I have been a member of the Hempfield Area Democratic Committee since 2022.

  • I was formerly a registered Republican. I voted for candidates from both major parties for many years. I switched my party registration to Democratic in January 2021.

Education

  • 1975-1979 Bloomsburg University, Bachelor of Science Business Administration, Information Processing

  • 2007-2009 Lebanon Valley College, Master of Business Administration

Why?

Many little things came together resulting in my running for East Hempfield supervisor. Consider this: since 2000, twenty Supervisors in East Hempfield have been elected. All twenty have been Republicans. This is in a township where less than half, specifically 48%, of registered voters are Republicans. This is also a township where Josh Shapiro won the governor’s race by 19% in 2022. It’s time for the “rest of East Hempfield” to be represented. My financial background and openness to new ways of doing things will be an asset to East Hempfield

Issues

Managed growth is an issue for many townships and municipalities. Fortunately, Lancaster County produced a bipartisan report in 2018 named Places2040 that I will use as a guideline.

An exciting upcoming initiative in East Hempfield is the planning of a new park. The current board has done a fine job of getting the process started. I suspect many of us would like to see some supervisors with new ideas take it to the next step, including additional ways of funding the park.

Testimonials

I have known Bob since grade school, and he has always been one of the smartest, hard working, and dependable people I know. His dedication to his wife, Carol and son, Ben, as well as to his community have been admirable. He is someone who is a strong collaborator, and stays focused until he has accomplished whatever goal he has set. His talents would be a great asset to the community, and I would highly endorse him for the office of Supervisor.

I have known Mr. Johnson for over 45 years and can attest that he is a man of many parts. He is an excellent composer & musician, a community minded churchgoer, a loyal friend, a dedicated family man, a sucessful IT professional, a sports enthusiast and avid tennis player, an avant-garde dancer & writer and a karate blackbelt. He has been a great mentor for me throughout my adult life. I fully endorse him as your best choice for the East Hempfield Supervisor position.

  • Tony Caravella, Florida

It is with great pleasure that I write this letter of endorsement for Robert M. Johnson, who is currently running for Supervisor of East Hempfield Township. I have personally known Mr. Johnson for almost thirty eight years as a close friend and former college roommate. This close relationship has given me unique insight into his character; particularly his leadership skills and work ethic. I see a man whose intellect, passion and judgment will make him a dynamic legislator for your town.

Mr. Johnson is bright, articulate, selfless and conscientious. He has always accepted the challenge of leadership, whether in the academic setting or the workplace. He also is a tireless worker, a person who challenges himself on a daily basis. I firmly believe that Mr. Johnson has the acumen and fortitude to be an effective political leader. Most importantly, he is a person that is willing to listen to both sides of an issue, and come to a conclusion that is only in the best interests of his community.

On a personal level, Robert is loyal, honest and sincere. His sense of community, along with his strong moral fiber, make him a candidate whose character is beyond reproach. I truly believe he will transform East Hempfield Township into a better place, one where the residents will be proud of.

In closing, I feel that Robert Johnson will be a fresh breath of air for your community. He is certainly not a “party politician “, who will be satisfied with the “to the victor goes the spoils” attitude that has invaded our lives today. He will be an invaluable asset to your community.

Mr. Caravella is an NCAA Division I All-American for Wresting, member of the National Wresting Hall of Fame, member of the Bloomsburg University Hall of Fame, a two-time NJ state-champion wrestling coach, and ranked #38 on the list of top NJ high school coaches of all time

Bob is a true friend. He is serious but funny. He is smart and a hard worker. When you look over his resume you can see how committed he is to everything that he does, whether it is family, work, faith or his community. I live in New Jersey but if I lived in East Hempfield Township I would definitely vote for Robert Johnson.
